FORCE REPAIR at the ESCMID Global 2025 in Vienna
At the prestigious ESCMID Global 2025 congress in Vienna, Dr Ziba Najmi from Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale, took the stage to present the most recent developments in the FORCE REPAIR project in colaboration with CIDETEC. The presentation “Antibacterial and biofilm eradication of mupirocin-loaded nano-emulsions” discussed the antibacterial and biofilm eradication effects of oil-in-water emulsions stabilised with functionalised hyaluronic acid, which are loaded with mupirocin against G+ and G- bacterial pathogens responsible for wound infections.
Dr Najmi offered valuable insights into the project’s advancements and highlighted the collaborative efforts driving its success. Our results demonstrated that oil-in-water emulsions stabilised with functionalised hyaluronic acid-formulated to protect mupirocin (MUP) from proteolytic degradation upon contact with human blood-do not interfere with the antibacterial activity and mature biofilm eradication efficacy of MUP against Gram-positive pathogens at its minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 1.2 microgram/mL. Furthermore, cytocompatibility assessment using human cells (hBMSCs and HGFs) confirmed that even at higher MUP concentrations (5 and 10 microgram/mL), the oil phase of the nano-emulsions exhibits no cytotoxicity effects.
ESCMID Global, organised by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, serves as a platform for sharing the latest topics of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology and fostering international collaboration. The 2025 edition was held from 11-15 April at the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center in Vienna, Austria.
We are happy we were a part of the ESCMID Global 2025, using the opportunity to present our latest results and engage with the scientific community.
